FAYE BUFFINGTON-HOWELL
Artist Statement

My art stems from my life and my ideas of beauty and truth. My life journey has involved many transitions including divorce, cancer, the death of my daughter, a near-death experience, and at age 70: the process of aging. Creating art is a catharsis, which allows me to heal and renew my spirit. Art is my primary mode of expression and communication with others, and it is my hope that it that can bring insight and healing.

I received my BS in Art from Fort Hays State College in Kansas in 1965. In 1986, I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and began doing colored pencil drawing and absorbing the cultures of Mexican Indian and Spanish art that I found there. In that art mecca, I visited art galleries, met artists, and sketched. The southwest continues to influence much of my art in color, symbols, and style.

During the past five years, here in the Midwest, I have worked through the subject matters of animals and landscapes, and combined the basic elements of sky, wind, earth, fire and water. I am intuitive and visionary in style. I use the human figure allegorically to represent metaphysical and sacred art, which expresses my belief in abstract ideas.

I strive to convey all of this in a positive, universal way for myself and for the viewer. Through art, I am developing a philosophy that expresses who I am as a unique individual who observes life and creates beauty.
